The Gypsy Loungeopens in the past at the apartment of a costumed crime-fightercalled The Dandy-Lion. The Dandy-Lion is an addict whohallucinates and talks to a giant giraffe. Still feeling the buzzfrom a night of partying, he decides to go off in search of evilat 4 a.m. Things take a deadly turn when a group of mischiefmakers , who were hired to scare The Dandy-Lion, wind up hisvictims when hallucinations cause The Dandy-Lion to view and heartheir actions and words as threatening. The Dandy-Lion winds upin jail for his crimes.
The story shifts tothe present and we are introduced to Gina Brecko, thesuper-powered daughter of a villain turned hero turned villainturned...well you get the idea. She's being interviewed for a jobinvolving - I assume - some kind of repossessions and/oracquisitions agency. Desperately wanting to escape from the lifeshe has and knowing money was the only way her dreams would evercome true. Gina risks everything by stealing and envelopecontaining an assignment for another 'agent.'
However, once shereaches her target -- complete in her Kerosene Gina costume --she cannot bring herself to complete the assignment. Worse, thekiller - whom she stole the assignment from - arrives and is notpleased! However will Kerosene Gina get out of this mess? I don'tknow, but I am definitely tuning in next issue to see!
The Gypsy Lounge isvisually unlike most comics that I have experienced. Each imageis a blend of reality with computer generated animated graphicsall in and around the panels. Jasen Lex's page layouts andperspective are so unique and stunning. The series portrays thecharacters in a realistic light and the lead, Kerosene Gina, isjust an average looking girl. Jasen could have made her a 'ballonbod, beautiful, woman' but he CHOSE to make her just averagelooking. Kudos! Jasen tells more of a story with his picturesthan most independents do with the whole project. However, hedoes not lack at all in the skills of written communications. Hisconversations and the dialogue are smooth and give the reader thefeeling of experiencing the issuerather than just 'reading.' Ifyou have the chance to experience The Gypsy Lounge, you'll seewhat I mean! I recommend this series to anyone looking forsomething familiar, yet different. Jasen Lex delivers just thatand more.
